The following diagnostic guide has been developed to facilitate field identification of soybean insect pests early in the season. Possible pest causes are listed for each symptom below. Insect names are hyper-linked, clicking on them will link to pages for further information about pest, plant damage, scouting methods, and links to Purdue's conventional management guidelines.

General Appearance: Seed eaten or sprout cut off

Symptom: Seed, hypocotyl, or cotyledons hollowed out

Cause(s): Seedcorn maggot
Wireworms
Seedcorn beetles

General Appearance: Uneven growth of plants or plants stunted, stem chewed off or killed

Symptom: Plants stunted, wilted or dead in isolated or widespread areas of field

Cause(s): Seedcorn maggots
White grubs
Wireworms
Cutworms
Slugs

OR

General Appearance: Uneven growth of plants or plants stunted, stem chewed off or killed

Symptom: Upper part of plant may be chewed off

Cause(s): Cutworms

General Appearance: Plants discolored

Symptom: Leaves yellow, plants stunted

Cause: White grubs
Grape colaspis grubs

General Appearance: Leaf tissue removed

Symptom: Leaves skeletonized or lacy in appearance; many veins left intact

Cause(s): Japanese beetle
Mexican bean beetle
Early instar green cloverworm

OR

General Appearance: Leaf tissue removed

Symptom: Rounded holes in leaves

Cause: Bean leaf beetle

OR

General Appearance: Leaf tissue removed

Symptom: Leaves torn and ragged, stems may have feeding scars or be cut off

Cause(s): Cutworms
Alfalfa weevil/beetle complex

OR

General Appearance: Leaf tissue removed

Symptom: Large irregular holes in leaves

Cause(s): Green cloverworm
Grasshopper nymphs
Various caterpillars
