Greetings from the Floriculture Area of Expertise Team at Michigan State University.  We’re starting the seventh year of the Greenhouse Alert e-newsletter, which now reaches over 350 greenhouse growers in Michigan and throughout the United States via e-mail, and many more who check the website periodically for updates.

Faculty working with greenhouse crops and district Extension educators with floriculture expertise will post short articles every second and fourth week of the month until mid-May.  These articles focus on cultural practices and pest management strategies for growing greenhouse crops.  Previous issues can be accessed via the Internet at: www.ipm.msu.edu/greenhouseAlert.htm or use the search engine.

We welcome your participation by sending us suggestions for article topics.  Please send your comments by e-mail to: catalert@msue.msu.edu.

Michigan greenhouse energy meetings
Erik Runkle
Horticulture

In an industry with declining profit margins and with the surge in fuel prices, there is increasing need to grow greenhouse crops in an energy-efficient manner.  The best approach is to attack this industry threat using a variety of strategies.  Michigan State University Extension is coordinating five grower meetings in Michigan to examine:
How to conserve energy by producing greenhouse crops efficiently using lighting and managing temperature.
Technological strategies to conserve heat in greenhouses.
Use of alternative fuels (wood, corn, wind, etc.) for greenhouse heating and power generation and which options are economical.
Grant and loan opportunities for greenhouse energy conservation.

These three-hour meetings are sponsored by the MSU Floriculture AoE Team and the Michigan Floriculture Growers Council (MFGC).  Participants will receive a notebook containing summaries of the available energy-saving options for more detailed information.  The registration fee will be only $10 per person for MFGC members and $20 per person for non-members.  Join the experts to learn how you can lower your fuel bills!

Speakers will include
Dr. Erik Runkle, Floriculture Extension Specialist, Michigan State University
Mr. Matthew Blanchard, Ph.D. candidate, Michigan State University
Dr. Steve Harsh, Agricultural Economist, Michigan State University
Dr. Chris Schilling, Mechanical Engineer, Saginaw Valley State University

More details and registration information will be available soon on the Floriculture AoE website: www.hrt.msu.edu/florAoE.  The meeting dates, locations and contacts are listed in the accompanying table.

Chemical disease controls for the greenhouse industry: A wall chart available now
Tom Dudek
District Extension Horticulture and Marketing Educator

Ring in the New Year in your greenhouse by obtaining and posting the latest version of the Chemical Disease Controls for the Greenhouse Industry wall chart written by Dr. Mary Hausbeck. This very popular wall chart (22 x 34 inches) for your greenhouse will help you decide what fungicides are labeled for specific greenhouse crop diseases. It was updated this summer and contains information to help you choose products that will work on the diseases you have in your crop or want to protect against.

Information on 74 fungicides includes: Trade name, common name, company name, labeling on vegetables, REI, disease it’s labeled on and comments for usage.

To obtain a copy, contact your local MSU Extension office and request it by the title or contact the MSU Bulletin Office at 517-353-6740. It is also available for order at: http://www.emdc.msue.msu.edu The cost is $4.00 plus postage per copy.
