Our mission: We promote the use of integrated pest management (IPM) and affiliated management tools to safeguard farm and environmental health through research-based education, service and demonstration and applied research.
Our special charge: We aid the integration of IPM and integrated crop management (ICM) activities across specializations, working with University, agency and private-sector colleagues. We work with campus specialists and Extension educators based throughout Michigan who conduct research and demonstration projects within fruit, landscape and nursery, field crops, vegetable and forestry plant production systems. We work with specialists in many units including the Departments of Plant Pathology, Entomology, Crop & Soil Sciences, Horticulture, and Forestry, and field staff of MSU Extension, the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Michigan Department of Agriculture.
Our current focused activities: In-season newsletters with crop and pest reports (CAT Alerts); publications to support pest diagnosis and understanding of pest biology and management; weather information to support pest management decision-making; demonstration and research in Michigan plant production systems with sponsored activities in fruit, field crops, vegetables, and organic production; web resources on beneficial insects; and collaborations to help farmers access incentive payments for IPM through EQIP.
Our funding is provided by federal and state resources along with special project grants from a range of sources. Some of Michigan's key commodity groups and food processors have joined to support our program through the IPM Alliance. Our 2008 Annual Report is available on the Internet. |
